Found Animal Report

Thank you for doing your part in helping reunite lost pets with their families! Please read the following section of tips that will help this animal have the best outcome of a reunion.

We highly recommend that ALL animals FOUND in Stanly County be brought to Stanly County Animal Protective Services for the legal and required 5 day stray hold, as the shelter is typically the first place where an owner comes to look for their missing pet! However, it is your right to conduct the stray hold at your residence, but according to Stanly County Oridinance Article VII Section 1, a report must be made with SCAPS within 72 hours of bringing the animal into your custody.

According to Stanly County Ordinance Article VII Section 3, it is unlawful for any person to refuse to surrender a stray animal to APS upon demand in order to reunite the animal with their owner.

We highly recommend posting the animal as found on the following Facebook groups:

  • Missing/Found Pets in Stanly County
  • Lost and found pets of Stanly, Montgomery, and Anson counties
  • Found or lost pets of the city of Albemarle and the county of Stanly
  • Lost & Found Dogs - North Carolina

You are require to have the found animal scanned for a microchip at the shelter or a veterinary clinic at no charge. If the animal has a microchip; the chip company can be found via petmicrochiplookup.org You should then contact the listed microchip company with the microchip number, and if the microchip is registered, the company should be able to provide or contact the owner on record. A request for the microchip implant facility will also tell you if the animal was adopted from a shelter or rescue. Please contact the shelter if you need further assistance! We can also assist with scanning the animal for a microchip during open business hours!

If the animal is wearing a rabies tag, please visit epi.dph.ncdhhs.gov and search the registry with the year and rabies tag number. Please contact the shelter if you need further assistance!

**If a report is made for an animal that WAS NOT found in Stanly County, the report will be void**

SCAPS will keep this Found Pet Report on file for at least 5 days (120 hours) of being submitted in case an owner comes forward. A record will always be able to be pulled in case issues arrise in the future.

Please be aware that the 5 day stray hold DOES NOT start until the Found Pet Report is submitted. At the end of the 5 day stray hold (120 hours), you become the legal owner of the above animal, and are then free to adopt or rehome the animal at your discretion. Absolutely NO alterations such as spay/neuter, microchip, amputation etc can be done on the above pet, unless life threatening, until the stray hold is complete.

Please be aware that if you chose to not bring the animal to the shelter, you will not have a legal transfer of ownership. In that case, if an original owner comes forward at any time in the future, that owner has every right to make this a civil matter if attempt to reclaim the animal.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you again for doing your part in helping reunite lost pets with their families!
